Surrounding Space

of course
as the day comes to a close
we don’t think

about the closure of a
moment
unless the closure

is forced upon us,
then
we are confronted with

a shadow
in a mirror
of a moment’s

silhouette—
this terrifying image
reiterates what horror

does so
gracefully—neglecting
the particular

the thing
a thing is
all to itself

god forbid
the coffee mug
lying on the kitchen
floor

with no one
to notice it,
wind coming through

the open
window
